Darjeeling gives you the whole postcard in one trip — the toy train's whistle through Ghum, the walk between tea rows at Happy Valley, and a 4am flask of tea while you wait for the sun to hit Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill. This route keeps driving to a minimum and lets the town do the rest.
Overnight train to New Jalpaiguri, then a shared car up through Kurseong. Evening free on Mall Road.
Pre-dawn drive to Tiger Hill for sunrise over Kanchenjunga, then the joy ride toy train from Darjeeling to Ghum and back.
Walk through Happy Valley Tea Estate, visit Ghum Monastery and the Peace Pagoda, and browse the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre.
Morning at Batasia Loop, afternoon left open for the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, the zoo, or simply the mall road cafés.
Morning transfer to NJP for the return train, reaching Kolkata by night.
